Art historian of the Italian renaissance and historiography.  Published first analysis of the manuscript of Anonimo Magliabechiano (q.v.).  Later studies included Michalengelo and Vasari.  Educated at University of Berlin.  Edited Michelangelo's letters, envisioned a comprehensive commentary on Vasari's ouevre, only part of which was realized. notes about Frey's opinions appear in Richard Offner's annotated catalog of the 1937 Mostra Giottesca.
