Prud'hon scholar and curator Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and later conservator at the Musée du Louvre. In 1924 he authored the catalogue raissone on P. P. Prud'hon.

Guiffrey's two areas of specialty were French primitives and eighteenth-century French painting.
