Hirmer, Max Date born: Place Born: Date died: Place died: Art book publisher and classicist. Hirmer was the son of Albert Hirmer und Irmgard Ernstmeier-Hirmer, photographers and photo-documenters. After World War II, Hirmer founded his publishing firm in 1948 principally as a way to publicize art using the most advanced photo technology. The firm was an outgrowth of a society for the advancement of study photographs, ("Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliches Lichtbild"), which his parents had amassed.
