Author of early American biography of artists.  His book Artists of America, featured biographies of  Washington Allston, Henry Inman, Benjamin West, Gilbert Charles Stuart, John Trumbull, James DeVeaux, Rembrandt Peale, Thomas Crawford. His work built on the early criticism of John Neal (q.v.).
