Maser, Edward Date born: 1924 Place Born: Detroit, MI Date died: 1988 Place died: Chicago, IL University of Chicago professor of baroque art. Maser attended the university of Michigan before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 during World War II. He returned to the University of Chicago where he gained his master's degree (1948). He traveled to the University of Frankfurt 1949-50 and the Florence (1950-52) for graduate study. While writing his dissertation, he taught at Northwestern University before accepting a professorship in 1953 at the University of Kansas. He also directed the art museum of the UK. Maser was awarded his Ph.D. from Chicago in 1957. In 1961 he joined his alma mater, chairing the department of art 1961-64. In 1972 he was named first director of the David and Alfred Smart Art Gallery, the university's art museum. He held the position until 1983. Home Country: United States Sources: "U of C.
