Specialist in late classical Roman art, particularly that found in Roman-occupied Germany. Curator at the Berlin Museum, 1927-1935, where he oversaw the reconstruction of the Pergamon altar and the Milet market tower. Transferred to the Rheinische Landesmuseum in Trier in 1935 due to political reasons. Removed from his post in 1945 by the Allied occupation forces through denazification proceedings.
