Director General of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; University of Amsterdam professor of art history.  Os received his Ph.D. in 1969 from the University in Groningen, writing on the topic of Sienese Gothic painting.  In 1974 he was named to the faculty at the University of Amsterdam.  In 1989 he assumed the directorship of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
