Director of the  Musée des beaux-arts, Lyon, France and instructor of art history at the Lycee Louis le Grand. Ernst Gombrich (q.v.) credits Rosenthal with the observation that Botticelli's popularity was primarily because his figures could have some many different attributes read into them.
